M.E.R.I.T. Overview
M.E.R.I.T. is an acronym for Mechanical Equipment Repair Instruction & Testing. M.E.R.I.T. are MSA’s certified maintenance and repair training programs for Fall Arrest Equipment. They are designed for MSA Channel Partners or large end user owners who need to be able to repair and maintain MSA self-retracting lanyards and related fall protection equipment.
M.E.R.I.T. training programs are intended for technicians who will be repairing, inspecting and testing fall protection equipment on a regular basis and are conducted either on-site at your location or at one of MSA's training facilities in Pittsburgh PA, Chicago IL, Houston TX, Toronto ON, or Edmonton AB.
Registration for any M.E.R.I.T. program requires prior approval from MSA sales and service management and required equipment and tools must be in place prior to scheduling training.
Class Requirements
MSA AUTHORIZED FALL PROTECTION SERVICE CENTER REQUIREMENTS
MSA M.E.R.I.T. Centers must receive authorization from MSA’s Regional and Corporate management and must comply with the following requirements:
- Provide facilities, equipment and competent personnel to meet MSA service standards.
- Each service center must have at least one service technician successfully complete the MSA MERIT repair training course under the instruction of an MSA factory instructor.
- Service center must purchase the required test equipment and tools prior to class attendance and must stock service parts prior to beginning service of MSA fall protection products.
- Agree to maintain at least one MSA trained certified technician at each service center location whose primary function is service.
- Agree to allow MSA or MSA’s agent to perform a recertification audit on the service center every 3 years
- Agree to have each service technician attend recertification training at least once every 3 years
- Agree not to employ sub-agents or subcontractors for the purpose of providing service on MSA fall protection products
- The Service Center complies with MSA’s procedures and recommendations
- MSA Manuals and support materials are kept current.
- Maintenance and repair questions are communicated to MSA for resolution.
- MSA is notified immediately of any changes regarding the ability of the Service Center to meet its obligations as an MSA authorized service center. (For example if the trained technician leaves)
- Agree to comply with the terms of the MSA Authorized Service Center for Fall Protection (MERIT) agreement.
The above requirements will apply to the addition of any new MSA MERIT service center locations by a parent organization of an existing MSA MERIT service center..
.5 Day MSA Latchways Level 1 - Competent Person for SRL Inspection Class

This 4 hour Level 1 training course is designed for the Fall Protection equipment user or At Risk Worker, their Supervisors and Managers, and the Safety Professional.
At the completion of this course, the participants will be able to discuss and demonstrate the following topics:
- Consensus Standards
- Formal documentation requirements
- Formal inspection process, including the criteria for pass/fail and disposal
- Equipment cleaning and storage

1 Day MSA Latchways Level 2 - SRL Maintenance Training Class
Course No. ZT-MERIT-LW2
This 8 hour Level 2 MSA Latchways Technician Level SRL Training course is designed for those individuals who will be repairing, inspecting and testing MSA Latchways Self Retracting Lanyards and have been identified as and are currently employed by an MSA Latchways Authorized Repair Facility. An additional investment of approximately $2,000 for maintenance tools is also required.
At the completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
- Explain theory of operation MSA Latchways SRL’s
- Demonstrate disassembly and inspection process
- Demonstrate reassembly and functional test
- Demonstrate testing procedure
- Perform quality assurance inspection

.5 Day MSA Latchways Level 2 - PRD Maintenance Training Class
ZT-MERIT-PRD2
The 4 hour MSA Latchways Technician Level 2 PRD training course is designed for individuals currently employed by an MSA Latchways Authorized Repair Facility who through their job description will be required to inspect, maintain, and recertify MSA Latchways PRD systems.
At the completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
- Explain theory of operation MSA Latchways PRD’s
- Demonstrate disassembly and inspection process
- Demonstrate reassembly and perform quality assurance inspection
The following is included in the registration fee:
- 1/2 Day of hands-on instruction by an MSA factory trained instructor.
- MSA Latchways Level 2 PRD Maintenance Manual.
- MSA-Latchways Level 2 Maintenance Certificate, valid for three (3) years.
.5 Day MSA Latchways SRL Recertification Training Class

This 4 hour Re-certification course is designed for individuals who require a new three (3) year recertification for either their Level 1 Competent Person for SRL Inspection or their Level 2 SRL Maintenance certificate.

The MERIT Lite training course is designed for technicians who will be repairing, inspecting and testing MSA's Workman® line of Self Retracting, Rescuer and Winch products. Certification is valid for three (3) years.
Those who should attend are individuals who have been selected by their organization to become certified to repair MSA fall protection equipment. Selected individuals will need to be employed by an MSA Channel Partner or by an end user organization that wishes to self-maintain a significant installation of MSA equipment.
At the completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
- Explain theory of operation for newer MSA SRL’s
- Demonstrate disassembly and inspection process
- Demonstrate reassembly and functional test
- Demonstrate testing procedure
- Perform quality assurance inspection

Selected individuals will need to be employed by an MSA Channel Partner or by an end user organization that wishes to self-maintain a significant installation of MSA equipment.

This course is designed for technicians who require MERIT recertification for repairing, inspecting and testing MSA fall protection equipment.

Selected individuals will need to be employed by an MSA Channel Partner or by an end user organization that wishes to self-maintain a significant installation of MSA equipment.
At the completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

1 Day MERIT and MERIT Lite New Product Upgrade Class
Course No. ZT-MERIT-NPU
This course is offered to current MERIT certified technicians who require additional training on newly introduced MSA Fall Protection equipment.
This Upgrade Training class is designed to enhance your current repair and maintenance capabilities and will not change or extend the current expiry date to your MERIT or MERIT Lite certificate.
It can be taken as a stand alone course at either of our MSA locations in Chicago and Edmonton, or added to one of our Recertification Courses listed.
Those who should attend are individuals who have been selected by their organization to become certified to repair MSA fall protection equipment. Selected individuals will need to be employed by an MSA Channel Partner or by an end user organization that wishes to self-maintain a significant installation of MSA equipment.
At the completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
- Explain theory of operation for MSA SRL’s
- Demonstrate disassembly and inspection process
- Demonstrate reassembly and functional test

2 Day MSA Fall Protection Engineered Systems Installation and Maintenance Training Class
ZT-FPINSTALLER
The 2 day MSA Fall Protection Engineered Systems Installation and Maintenance training course is designed for individuals currently employed by an MSA Latchways Authorized Repair Facility who through their job description will be required to inspect, install, maintain, and recertify MSA Fall Protection engineered systems.
*An initial investment of approximately $20,000 USD for tools and equipment is a required element for this certification.
Horizontal System Module Objectives:
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of system design and interpret a given horizontal system design specification in order to install the system.
- Explain the use of, and application of a horizontal system.
- List your responsibilities for the creation and application of local on site and pre start safety plan prior to installation.
- Select and use the correct tools for a traditional horizontal system installation.
- Perform pre installation requisites prior to installation.
- Install a given traditional horizontal system.
- Certify a traditional horizontal system post installation.
Vertical Module Objectives:
- Explain the theory and use for all vertical systems and application of a given vertical device.
- Specify a vertical system and list the structural requirements for the installation.
- Identify and apply components as part of a vertical system for a given structure.
- List your responsibilities for the creation and application of local on site and pre start safety plan prior to installation.
- Demonstrate an understanding of and perform pre installation requisites prior to starting the installation.
- Select and use the correct tools in order to install a vertical system.

Course No. ZT-CPINSPECT
The Competent Person for Equipment Inspection course is designed for the Fall Protection equipment user, or At Risk Worker, as well as their Supervisors or Manager, and the Safety Professional.
