Confined Space Training Overview
MSA's Confined Space educational training programs are designed for both MSA Channel Partners and end users of MSA Confined Space equipment.
MSA training courses give you the opportunity to participate in the most active, hands-on, solution based training available utilizing MSA portable instruments, SCBA and Supplied Air Respirators, tripods, and rescue systems.
Our comprehensive, hands-on courses can be taught at your facility or at one of MSA's North American training facilities, which are located in Chicago, IL, Houston, TX, Pittsburgh, PA, Toronto, ON or Edmonton, AB, Canada.
Our training facilities are unsurpassed in the industry and offer an unparalleled training experience.
Advanced registration for these programs is required.
2 Day – Confined Space Entry and Operations
Course No. ZT-CONFINEDSPACE
This confined space entry and operations course is designed to aid the student in better understanding what a confined space is and how to properly identify and work in such spaces. This course studies applicable regulations, typical confined space hazards, control measures and proper equipment selection, inspection and use. This class includes both classroom and practical, hands-on exercises – including basic rescue techniques.
This 2 day course is comprised of the following:
- Definitions and dangers of confined spaces
- Introduction of applicable regulatory standards
- Identification of confined spaces and the atmospheric dangers and risks
- Requirements for permit-required confined spaces
- Use of job safety controls for entry into potentially unsafe spaces
- Respiratory
- Gas monitoring
- Ventilation
- SCBA
- PPE
- Post entry procedures
- Rescue planning and basic rescue techniques
- Hands-on exercises with confined space and rescue equipment

1 Day – Confined Space Train-the-Trainer Training
Course No. ZT-TTTCSPACE
**** Pre-requisite is MSA’s 2 day Confined Space Entry and Operations Course
MSA’s Confined Space Train-the-Trainer course is designed to prepare employees that must train select confined space courses and material at your facility. The class provides the student the necessary skills to develop, deliver and evaluate students on basic confined space knowledge and technical understanding.
The 1 day course is comprised of the following:
- Regulatory discussion and implications
- Assessment and identification of confined spaces and their hazards based on governmental analysis criteria
- Discussion of confined space safety program development based on the needs of the specific site, including recommended safety measures to follow for routine entries as well as equipment needed and basic technological knowledge needed to teach about it
- Adult education methodology with teach back requirements specific to the topic of confined space entry
- Includes points to stress, questions to ask, and demonstrations to perform to drive home important concepts for adult learners
- Involves techniques to use for analyzing student comprehension and for best helping them to remember company procedural mandates for PRCS entry
- Confined space training program educational material development and lesson plans
- Guidance on performing practice exercises related to confined space entry at the site, including regular entry exercises as well as non-entry rescue practice utilizing common entry / rescue equipment
- Review, assessment, and guidance of student instructors for proficiency in teaching core content related to the topic of confined space entry

1 Day – Confined Space Awareness Training
Course No. ZT-CSAWARE
MSA’s 1-Day Confined Space Awareness training course is designed for those individuals who are responsible for managing and overseeing employees working in confined space entry activities.
Who should attend? Facility Managers, Team Leaders, Supervisors and those individuals who will manage third contracted confined space entry operations at their facilities.
Learning outcomes:
- Defining Confined Spaces. Explain legislative, consensus standards and operational requirements.
- Explain roles, responsibilities and procedures for Confined Space operations.
- Identify typical hazards and associated risks. How to assess and control hazards.
- Manage entry permits and hot work permits.
- Identifying hazardous Energy sources & selecting adequate LOTO & isolation equipment.
- Managing contractors and coordinating documentation
- Selection, application & maintenance of adequate equipment for confined space entry-Fall protection, gas detection.
- Applying correct ventilation techniques.
- Select and use respiratory protection equipment (SCBA and SAR).
- Requirements for plans & procedures for Confined Space entry.
- Emergency response procedures and confined space rescue hierarchy techniques.
Course format – Training is instructor led multi-media presentation incorporating instructor demonstration, student manual and learner practical hands on approach. Training will run approx. 8 hours. Learners will be given a written exam and will receive a certificate of completion with training contact hours, signed and dated by the MSA Instructor upon successful completion of the scheduled training.
1 Day – Confined Space Rescue Training
Course No. ZT-CSRESCUE
**** Pre-requisite is MSA’s 2 day Confined Space Entry and Operations Course
MSA’s Confined Space Rescue course is designed to prepare employees that must perform confined space rescues at your facility. The course is compliant with 29 CFR 1910.146 (k) and provides both classroom and extensive hands-on exercises. The training will provide your employees with the knowledge, skills and technical ability to safely and efficiently when perform rescues at your facility.
The 1 day course is comprised of the following:
- Regulatory discussion and implications
- Assessment and identification of confined space hazards
- Rescuer duties
- Atmospheric monitoring
- Respiratory protection equipment review
- Ventilation equipment review
- Fall protection equipment review
- LOTO
- Rope and rescue techniques
- Patient packaging
- Practice exercises, review and assessment
