The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Section 608 of the Clean Air Act prohibits the knowing release of refrigerant during the maintenance, service, repair, or disposal of air-conditioning (AC) and refrigeration equipment. EPA requires proper refrigerant management practices by those who buy or sell refrigerant, technicians, owners and operators of AC and refrigeration systems, and others. These requirements apply for all refrigerants that contain ozone-depleting substances, e.g., hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), and non-exempt substitute refrigerants, e.g., hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) and blends thereof. In summary, the EPA Refrigerant Recycling & Emissions Reduction Program defines:
- Robust record keeping
- Leak rate calculations
- Equipment leak thresholds
- Leak repair time frames
- Leak inspection requirements
- Retrofit and retirement timescales
- Chronically leaking appliance reporting

The PGM-IR portable refrigerant monitor offers superior performance and functionality for low ppm level leak detection of refrigerants, Carbon Dioxide, Nitrous Oxide or Sulfur Hexafluoride. A built-in library of 60+ refrigerants enables the PGM-IR to accurately detect the smallest leaks at their source. The unit is immune to sudden changes in temperature or humidity and to over-exposure. The PGM-IR requires no zeroing of positive readings with extended exposure to gas. It has a data logging capacity of up to 200 readings.
